OFFICE HOME AND STUD 2007 - 38%
Customer Reviews
Hesitant before purchase but now very pleased, 02 Sep 2008
Having the need to source new software for new computer and upgrade others I searched the reviews on Amazon but was worried to see some not so very positive comments about the Home and Student edition. However need and positive past experience with MS Office products overcame concerns and I ordered it. The good news is I had nothing to worry about, it loaded perfectly and is running just fine. Powerpoint is there in its entirety.
One very happy customer and good value for money.
Microsoft office 2007, 21 Aug 2008
I purchased this product over amazon last week for £69.99 and now its gone down to £59.99 I can't belive it, so not fair. This office 2007 is ok the only problem I had with it is finding half of the things I need to use, as its all it sections of folders. If your saving documents make sure to save it with the drop down box of microsoft 1997-2003 as then you can open up this document on other ps which do not have office 2007. Overall its a good product.

I've spent the past four months trying to write a book using Word 2007 - It has proved to be one of the most irritating and complicated pieces of software that I've ever had the misfortune to use.
Brilliant so far - an excellent upgrade, 06 Aug 2008
I have just received Office 2007 Home & Student and Outlook 2007 to upgrade from 2003 - and after reading some of the reviews here I was initially a bit wary. Thank goodness I took no notice. It's a vast improvement and I have adapted to the new format almost instantly.
First - I decided to upgrade over 2003 because unless you are committed to a new software upgrade you are tempted to go back to the familiar. Or so I thought. In any case - running both does have some difficulties unless you make some registry changes (so I've read) so I opted for the complete upgrade. Installation went without a hitch and all my data was there in Outlook - safe and sound.
Now to the infamous ribbon - it's easy to learn (I've only had the software a few hours and I'm using it as if I'd had it forever) and I do find it more intuitive. I had to look up how to compare documents (I do a lot of marking for students and so comparing revised assignments is a major task for me) and the new version is heavenly. My styles transferred across - and virtually everything I've needed to do (insert pictures, add a border to an image, use a spreadsheet, send e-mails, etc) has gone without a hitch. In many cases I found I'd done it without even thinking about it.
My concession to the old way of working was to add all my favourites to the Quick Access Toolbar (I didn't realise from the reviews that you can add anything at all to this) so I can still one-click on the things I use a lot - just like in 2003. Frankly I cannot understand why anyone would go back to an earlier version after trying this. And the price is sweet.
I am looking forward to exploring even more delights. I wish I had upgraded sooner.
Excellent value and it increases productivity, 23 Jul 2008
I read the reviews on MS Office 2007 (Home & Student edition) and was a little concerned that this product would be of an inferior quality to the 2003 version.
At first glance the difference between 2007 and previous versions is significant, however this difference is to the benefit of the product. Excel has a simplicity that ensures greater productivity and Powerpoint provides a clear and concise slide generation process that removes many of the nuances of previous versions (e.g slide animation consistency). 1note improvements will benefit students with the introduction of a clear note book fileing system.
So overall I am pleased with the product and my only gripe is that the Project 2007 version (a stand alone product) lacks the "Ribbon" application.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, 3-Desktop, 1 year Subscription (PC)
After using the free editions of AVG and later Avast!4.8(which both did a good job of keeping my PC virus-free), I was offered a trial of Internet Security 2009 through the Amazon Vine Program.
Installation took about 10 minutes and was fairly straightforward as the
program automatically installs to the Default settings, which are suitable
for most users. After installation the latest virus databases are also downloaded, after that the virus database quietly updates when needed.
There's an extensive user interface enabling advanced users to customise
their settings. The user interface has been the main difference I've found between this and free AV programs such as Avast! in that it offers more functionality.
It has kept my system well protected so far as it has a slightly higher detection rate than AVG or Avast!, and the only thing that stops me giving it 5/5 is that occasionally I've had page errors in Internet Explorer which I think are caused by the ad-blocker. I've tried changing settings but it still occurs occasionally.
Other than that I'd definitely recommend Kaspersky Internet Security as
a good means of keeping your system free from viruses and malware.
very good, 28 Aug 2008
this product has kept my computer secure for the last month since i installed it. It is SO much better than Norton which used to slow down my computer so much.

Best one so far!, 28 Aug 2008
This is one of the best anti-virus programs I've used to date. I've even replaced the free AVG on my desktop PC with this! One of the best (and fastest) features of this version, is that unlike other AV programs, it doesn't waste time scanning files that haven't changed since the last scan.
My first scan took just under an hour, and the second took about 5 minutes. That's pretty useful when you don't want the computer kept busy scanning for ages. Also, if you don't have Windows set to automatically download and install updates, Kaspersky will bring up a pop-up list of programs that need updating on any full scan... another useful feature.
On the first scan it found something called a backdoor Trojan. With AVG I had to decide what to do with the infected file, heal, delete or quarantine - but Kaspersky made the decision for me, which was most welcome, as I'm never sure what action to take a with a virus.
I changed the settings to schedule a full scan once a week, as the default settings were set to `scan on demand'. I knocked one star off because I had some installation problems that shut my computer down with no warning. I finally managed to install it on the third attempt.
As far as the firewall is concerned, I left all the default settings as they came. I don't get constantly prompted to take action (unlike Norton), as Kasperksy employs some kind of intelligent thinking that makes the decisions for me (in much the same way it decides what to do with viruses.)
All in all, I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to be bothered with deciding what to do with viruses, or how to configure firewalls, as Kaspersky pretty does everything on its own, and so far, it's working just fine :)
Good security product with a lightweight 'footprint', 22 Aug 2008
Kapersky seem to be one of the good guys in the Anti-virus world, their product seems to have avoided the bloat that has accompanied Symantec and even McAfee products.
The product installs easily and updates fairly quickly, it also seems to use less system resource than comparable packages even the free ones.
The only niggles are that it's fussy about previous security products and if they haven't cleanly uninstalled it refuses to install. You can use Revo unistaller to get around this, or manually trawl the registry, which isn't much fun. The other niggle is that it is fussy about you installing new program which can be annoying.
Other than that an excellent product, well worth a look if you're worried about viruses/ malware on your PC (which you should be).
Excellent Anti Virus at a great price - and it works!, 21 Aug 2008
I can recommend this software 100% for anyone looking to upgrade from a basic Anti Virus to one which does a bit more and cathces not just viruses but Malware etc. It's easy to install and use, takes just an hour or so to learn about in the useful HELP section on the disc and is easy to update and schedule. Well worth the money and the hour or so getting used to the software, set up etc.

I 'upgraded' to this from Norton Personal Firewall. Have now uninstalled Norton Internet Security as had trouble with pop-ups ever since installing it. The old Firewall does the job and no more ads! I understand Norton have discontinued the Ad blocking. Why??
Wouldn't recommend this priduct - waste of money.
Beware if you add/remove hardware, 27 Aug 2008
I have used Norton for many years, but this version has convinced me I will never use them again. The problems started two days after installing the new version. The software said the licence key had expired. After numerous calls to get through to support, I eventually succeeded and was told that I needed to uninstall, change the computer clock back 1 month and re install. This "fix" seemed to work. A few weeks later, with my new machine apparently working well, I decided to copy all my data from an old machine onto the new machine with Norton. So I put in the hard drive, and Norton claimed the licence had again expired. Connecting to the Norton site the key seemed to be successfully recovered. After copying all my data I removed the old hard drive, and again Norton claimed the licence had expired. This time it failed to recover.
After hours of trying, I eventually got through to Norton support and was told I had installed the software on at least three machines according to their records, and they were unwilling to discuss further. They suggested I was guilty of software theft. My only option, according to them, was to buy a new copy of Norton, and then they would help me with any installation issues.
Of course, I did have another option. And that is to take my business elsewhere.
So beware of offers that seem to imply you are getting a "deal" with any 3 user license.
Norton Internet Security 2008, 13 Aug 2008
A trial version of Norton was installed on my Acer laptop when I bought it. I decided to change to McAfee since I already owned a copy, but it kept crashing due to McAfee's 'Hackerwatch'. I bought a copy of Norton and it has installed like a dream and is working perfectly. No going back to McAfee for me!
So glad I removed it!, 08 Aug 2008
I had this software installed on my laptop and after many suggestions from my friends I removed it and installed McAfee. So glad I did that! The laptop is so much faster now and McAfee is not obtrusive at all as Norton is. I would not install it again even if given for free.
NB. My version of McAfee does not have a firewall though (as opposed to Norton) so I am relying on Vista for that! so far so good
Brilliant!, 05 Jul 2008
Have used Norton for 5yrs with no problems but this years renewal came around and couldnt access Norton web pages from AOL to download renewal, so what to do? Checked out prices for whole new package and Amazon the best by far. Received in couple of days but then dredding the actual update. Would AOL work afterwards and how many days would it take to get back online, last year with download renewal took 3 days!!! Well have just done the whole process including writing this review in 45 mins, WOW!!! All working brilliantly!! Did download uninstall tool from Norton first as recommended by other reviewers. Would advise any AOL users to go for it.

Not a cheap option - cynical Microsoft pricing -and you will not get what you should be able to expect!, 29 Jul 2008
Dear All,
A first-time negative reviwer, and a previous admirer of the Microsoft Office stable, I have to register disgust at this particular Microsoft offering. It is misleading, and if you want a comprehensive product, you are going to have to spend a lot more.
As backgound, I am a "silver" post-grad now involved in cardiology related voluntary work with the NHS. My wife is a seving Headteacher. At the turn of last year we decided to update our long sufferring systems, which were struggling to cope with Office XP professional (2003).
As a Sony fan, I bought myself an AR series large screen desktop replacement, together with the ultimate boy's toy -a full powered micro PC (Sony UX-1XN). My wife got a semi-pro CR series. The point is that the first came with Vista home premium operating systems and the others sport full Vista Business, so I thought it appropriate to upgrade to a three user vista compatable Office licence.
I have rated the product 3 stars. In fairness, if you are prepared to put in the learning effort, there are significant improvements in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.BUT:
1)No access to the relational database "Access", or any update to that.
2) Most importantly, the student version does not support or include any version of Outlook. Naively, I thought that they may have substituted Outlook by improving windows Calendar, Mail Manager, contacts etc. That is not the case. I am now dependent on my ISP providers mail manager , with the lack of appropriate security. I have also tried installing my licenced 2003 version, but either I am inept or it is being blocked. I have not been able to find multi-license for outlook, and when I last looked it will cost around £ 80 per computer to bring outlook on board -£240 on top of of your licence.
3)Finally, One Note is in essence a freebie (aka. a marketing experiment) included with the student version. I have played with this a little but conclude that for most users it is not sufficiently developed to be useful. However, as I mentioned, I bought a Sony UX1 - one ofthe world's smallest full-functioning solid state computers. As part of its on-board tricks, it has a touch-snsitive screen, which lets me review and comment(in handwriting - tranlsated to text) on word documents. Some of the concepts in one-note could be developed in that environment, but not for most current users.

different interface to 2003 but I like the addition of OneNote, 18 Jul 2008
This is very different from 2003 version - the interface has really changed and today I have spent my time searching for various things like paper orientation.
So far I am happy with the 2007 version - as a student I think the inclusion of OneNote could prove useful. I had seen reviews of it before and was pleased to see it included in the Home and Student version this time.
What is it? Should you buy it?, 17 Jun 2008
This is a licence for a three computer version of
- Wordprocessor - Word;
- Spreadsheet - Excel;
- Presentation Manager - PowerPoint; &
- Note recorder OneNote
In the box, you get one set of installation files on a DVD, and one licence code that can be registered for three computers in the same home.
Called a Home & Student edition, you do not need to have a student in your home in order to legally use this product, but there is a restriction - you are not allowed to use this product for any business reasons. So if you run a business from home this is NOT for you. - Microsoft market an Office Small Business Edition which comes with extra features and web help for small business users.
However, if you just want something to write letters; write notes; and, do the family finances at home, this is a sensible and cheap solution which makes Microsoft Works almost pointless.
An obvious thought here - there aren't many non-commercial reasons to use PowerPoint at home other than for kids homework so why include it? Publisher (used for writing Newsletters and very popular among churches) or the database program Access (although difficult to learn) would have been of more use, whilst the loss of Office Outlook (not to be confused with Outlook Express) is annoying if you already use an older version as your e-mail system.
Note however that Office 2007 only works with Windows XP or Vista, so computers running Windows 95, 98 or ME can NOT run this product.
With a new version, one expects improvements and in this case there are many. The most obvious being the new menu system which takes a bit of getting used to but needs to be learnt as this will be the future.
You get Word, Excel & PowerPoint as in previous versions but not Outline and do not get (in the box atleast)a cheaper upgrade to other useful programs such as Publisher and Access (in previous versions this was an option).
In place you get OneNote - and this is an advantage as it is an excellent new product for writing notes in some sort of order (the program takes words and pictures) and excels at copying words and images off webpages such as an invoice. This program is very useful and worth experimenting with as it is a genuine new approach to storing information.
Worth it? Yes because for three licences, this is cheap, and it is an excellent product that the world uses. If you have kids, then they will need to be able to use this by the time they start work.
If your prime purchase is for your children, then while the above is true, it may be worth changing to this version at the same time as your children's school does - it makes the learning curve of the new interface easier and makes working on files both at school and home easier. Note: schools often change major software such as this during the Summer Holidays - school IT staff do not get the same long holidays as the children.
Faults?
1. No ability to cheaply add on other Microsoft Office products such as Publisher or Access which many students or home users would want;
2. Documents are saved by default as ".docx" and not ".doc" (and also in Excel ".xlsx" etc.) This is a problem if you send a document by e-mail to someone else as their computer can probably not read your .docx file, so you need to either "save as" as a .doc for this document or alter (in options) the default setting to always save as a .doc file. - Easy but annoying.
3. At the top of the window of each application instead of saying "Document 1 - Microsoft Word", it says "Document 1 - Microsoft Word non-commercial use" (or Excel etc.) in this version. This looks naff, and is not easy to remove.
4. The new layout of menus and buttons at the top of each program is a pain to re-learn, but as I said earlier, this will be the future so one needs to bite the bullet on this one at some stage.
Installation Tip: Remove all old versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote before installing this new version, by doing this your registry and hard drive will have less in them and work faster. Remember, you can leave applications such as Outlook and Access 2003 on your computer, to run alongside your Office 2007 applications.

Appalling, 16 Aug 2008
Good protection from a trusted name...., 31 Aug 2008

No ad blocking , 28 Aug 2008
I 'upgraded' to this from Norton Personal Firewall. Have now uninstalled Norton Internet Security as had trouble with pop-ups ever since installing it. The old Firewall does the job and no more ads! I understand Norton have discontinued the Ad blocking. Why??
Wouldn't recommend this priduct - waste of money.

Would never touch a Symantec Product Again, 18 Jul 2008
The product is an absolute joke. And the Technical Support / Customer Service at Symantec is even worse.
1.) Upon Starting the PC I am greeted with multiple pop-ups - Virus Definitions Out of Date and Virus Scan Out of Date etc etc. On entering the software everything is ok.....
2.) The system seems to hang on the "one button check up" during the Norton Cleanup scan and then after 30 minutes will find files to clean up. Example found 763 then cleaned. Immediately ran again and found 1091, then cleaned (again). Immediately ran again and found 2111.
3.) Have used Symantec Chat on 4 occasions and each time they tell me that it is sorted. When I start the computer again, the problems start again.
On the 4th occasion i spent over 1 hour being passed from person to person, each as seemingly useless as the other.
I would never consider using this again even if backed into a corner and threatened with extreme torture.
Hope this helps....
PS. I run a very new and highly specced PC with Vista (which is also fraught with problems) (however Symantec do assure us that the software is fully compatible with VISTA....
Norton Internet Security 2008 Plus SystemWorks Basic Edition Bundle Pack, 1 User Edition (PC)
THE BUSINESS Will do me nicely THANKYOU., 25 Apr 2008
Originally Symantec allowed me to download 2008 free when i was using 2007 on Windows XP and i liked what i saw.
The new programme takes complete control of your computer to such an extent that to some it may be overpowering but along with McAfee,Norton is one of the best sellers in Virus Software.
If you are accustomed to using 2007 then you will certainly like 2008 as it is set out logically similarly to 2007.
Norton 2008 looks in certain ways very similar to the previous 2007 and operates in a very similar way but the entire programme has been vastly improved appearence wise and there are fewer boxes to tick but the new software automatically asks you do you want to run Live Update or allow this programme to run.
Some people will find the intrusion of all these boxes opening up every now and then annoying but the information these boxes ask really simplifies the security of your internet browsing.
I have only one complaint about 2008 and that is its the only operating system for Windows Vista.
Previously i had been happily using an almost new 2007 Norton on Xp with still over two hundered days of subscription to go but my Xp became sluggish and tempremental so wisely or foolishly i do not know i formatted my entire computers Hard Drive and installed Vista Premium.
Vista is a dream to use when you get the hang of it and the Aero interface is really usefull. There are so many background enhancements for the overall performance and appearence of Vista that im pleased i took the plunge but come on Symantec allow 2007 to work on it aswell.
Having visited my local branch of Staples recently i noticed they were selling 2008 for a very decent £24.95 including a free Systems Doctor disc aswell.
This disc was intended for the future when my 2007 subscription expired but lo and behold 2007 is only compatible with Xp and willnot work on Vista so thankfully i had a new 2008 disc waiting and im very pleased with the goods so far.
IF YOU ARE USING 2007 YOU WILL CERTAINLY ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF USING 2008.

Appalling, 16 Aug 2008
Good protection from a trusted name...., 31 Aug 2008

This is a licence for a three computer version of
- Wordprocessor - Word;
- Spreadsheet - Excel;
Faults?
1. No ability to cheaply add on other Microsoft Office products such as Publisher or Access which many students or home users would want;
Microsoft Office 2007 Review, 22 Apr 2008
The new Microsoft Office 2007 has a totally different interface as oppsoed to the old 2003 vresion.
I find it much easier and clearer, it takes a bit of gettin use to if you have used the previous version.
It also has a lot of different features and it makes whatever you're using Microsoft Office for easier.
Norten, 12 Apr 2008
I have used norton for the past 4 years. I think this securty is the best.
Don't upgrade, consider not buying Office, 25 Aug 2008
This new version of Office has too many problems. In addition to the slow performance the lack of compatability with other versions (meaning settings have to be changed to save files in the old format) makes day to day operation a pain. Added to that network operation on classic Office files is very uncertain.
I have tried three service pack versions. The first one wouldn't open Excel XLS files through the network, then after the next service pack it did, after the next fix pack it didn't.
Files seem to randomly get saved into last used save folders when they have been opened from somewhere else. If you want basic Word processing and spreadsheet analysis with presentation save money and buy iWork. The learning curve will be shorter than the frustration trying to make Office 2008 work. And you can install on five computers.iWork '08 Family Pack
Something i've found out too late!!, 18 Aug 2008
everyone needs to consider when choosing either iwork or office that when you receive e-mails most attachments will be office documents. so if you choose to only buy one it may be worth your while getting office for the convenience of being able to read sometimes important attachments!!!
At last a modern version of Office for MAC users., 10 Aug 2008
I am a dual MAC and PC users. generally I use the MAC for play and photography and the PC for work and to use those software programmes which are not dual platform - I mean not MAC friendly.
I have used Microsoft Office from its first incarnation and nothing touches it for its ability and power and its worldwide recognision. I have used the MAC programmes but whilst I like them they are somewhat more basic then I like. So I saw this and bought it, even after reading the awful reviews from some reviewers.
My view, it does exactly what I want it to do, I can easily send Excel and Word files to my PC with no platform problems and as yet I can't fault it. The big plus for me is that it has Entourage so I can down load my Outlook emails and MAc emails at the same time and it has Messenger.
There are a few things I would have liked in the programme and these are firstly, that Messenger was as powerful as the Microsoft PC version. The MAC version has no video and no shared files facility so if I want to send a file or start a video with a mate I have to swap platforms.
The other problem I had is that this version comes with 3 licences. Great, unless your daughter, like mine, loads the software and uses the same licence I used. Microsoft then freeze the use of that programme on that computer and even removing the programme will not resolve the issue. I had to remove the programme and the cookies in the MacBook then use Time Machine and go back a week an reload from there. Takes about 4 hours!!!
Anyway I suppose thats my problem not Microsoft.
All in all a great bit of software and please I hope that software developers soon catch up and write more great programmes for the MAC.
Great, 18 Jul 2008
I would like to say that this software is much better than 2004 and so far i have not found any problems with it. It loads very fast and hasn't crashed once yet.
Works Well. Better than Mac Pages, 04 Jul 2008
Have had no problems at all with word 2008, no crashes no speed problems. Tried using Mac Pages but pages has limited functionality, so use word.
