Better than before, 20 Nov 2008
Norton 2009 is a vast improvement on its predecessors. It has built on the positives of previous versions and Symantec actually seem to have learnt from criticisms levelled by many in the past, including myself.
This version is quicker to install, update, and use than any of the previous versions I have used and it is less pedantic in addressing programmes it hasn't registered before. It still seems to offer a great level of protection, much better than many of its rivals, and blends well with XP and Vista.
Another great improvement in NIS 09 is that the price is down significantly from previous years, even for the multiple computers version which previously has been ridiculously expensive. The fact that Amazon has it under half the RRP is even better. A great price and a vastly improved Internet Security programme.
Norton, 20 Nov 2008
Another year and another Norton Internet Security package.
This was installed on a PC which had come with a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security that was about to end. The installation and registration process was quick and straightforward and the update scan and download was likewise. The software appears to run quietly in the background - Norton claims that the software is "fast and light". This probably has more to do with most modern PCs having at least 1GB of RAM than the software being any faster or lighter than previously. The software can be used on 3 PCs per household and lasts 12 months. There is full, free and unlimited chat and phone support for one year from the initial installation of the software. I have not used this support and therefore I'm unable to comment on how effective it is.
This is a decent security package - all threats are covered under one umbrella, so there is plenty of appeal for the novice PC user. However, there is plenty of free software which covers most of the bases here that will appeal to the more experienced user.
Awful Software, 17 Nov 2008
This has got to be the worst software ever created. I have experienced it twice now and both times removed it and replaced it with far superior free software. It is intrusive and slow down your system. My first experience was preinstalled on a new laptop. it would not let me connect to a wifi connection. Removed Norton all ok. Second experience was on a computer that was running v.slow. Removed Norton all ok! Ran a virus check using free software and found several worms and trojans that Norton had let through. Even if Norton were giving this away with a 100 pound note in the box i still wouldn't install it on any of my computers!
Norton Internet Security - Fine until it goes wrong!, 16 Nov 2008
I always liked Norton, and had a couple of trouble free years using the product.
Based upon my recent experiences however, I would strongly advise against buying. After they offered me a free upgrade, I have had numerous problems, and the support (or lack of) is shocking. You can try a lovely premium rate number, or you can use their "chat" service that does not work. I have wasted so much time just trying to get someone to help.
Norton Internet Security 2009, 12 Nov 2008
Billed as delivering a faster and more streamlined edition of Norton's acclaimed protection platform, Internet Security 2009 (NIS 09) had a lot to live up to given that my previous 'general user' experiences with Norton products had been distinctly user-unfriendly and not all that impressive in terms of performance and efficiency.
First impressions were fairly good, with NIS 09 installing considerably quicker than I was expecting, taking around three to four minutes without the hassle of ploughing through layers of advanced setting options. Once officially registered, the software's (customisable) main interface appears, offering a dashboard of easy to peruse controls and also access to a handy and in-depth help portfolio covering the entire program.
Already feeling a little more well laid out and user-friendly than prior Norton offerings, it's not difficult to get to grips with NIS 09's three core sections: Computer, Internet and Identity, which in turn offer up the likes of scan history, system scan options, live updates, quarantined files, firewall options, e-mail scanning, anti-phishing and more.
As the product's title suggests, Norton's package attempts to cover pretty much all the bases when it comes to malicious attacks capable of infecting or grabbing control of your system, bombarding you with spam, or even stealing your personal details. But how does it perform when push comes to shove?
A big plus point for this reviewer was the immediate improved speed of NIS 09's scanning, which ran through the whole computer in a matter of minutes (of course, speed will differ per user based on the amount of files that require scanning). However, it remains to be seen whether that efficiency is maintained over time, which is something that blighted my last encounter with Norton-branded protection.
In terms of scanning for all types of malware (worms, Trojans, and the like), NIS 09 seemed to perform well in general but struggled a little when attempting to scan through password-protected files. And, when tasked with blocking known malicious Web sites, it caught most but surprisingly turned a blind eye to one or two such destinations well known for being dangerous to unwitting computer systems.
Thanks to its user-implemented spam detection and filtration feature, NIS 09 is able to monitor a user's e-mail account for any unwanted activity, and Norton's latest package certainly seems more than capable of assisting in rooting out unwanted and potentially harmful inbox fluff. As a bonus layer of protection, an additional instant messaging scan is also available, which scrutinises any files downloaded through IM clients such as AIM, Yahoo, and MSN Messenger.
Ultimately, as with any mainstream system protection software, Norton Internet Security 2009 - 1 User 3 Computers (PC) provides relatively solid performance that works hard to block the Net's myriad of threats and improve the overall stability of the user's experience. Granted, it won't deflect everything that nefarious Web criminals throw at it, but there isn't a product available that guarantees such performance and NIS 09 is a marked improvement over its Norton predecessors.
Easy to use. Offers more layered scanning and security than previous Norton solutions. Regular live updating keeps protection sharp edged. Provides a convincingly comprehensive blanket for typical home users. Mainstream protection at an affordable mainstream price. Norton finally appears to be shaking its reputation for being fiddly and a little underwhelming. I'm almost converted.

THis caused us enormous problems. See our full review in upgrade 2009 - we returned to 2008 as all 5 of our systems failed using this product. I will be avoiding it.
Does what it says on the tin, 24 Oct 2008
I've been using Norton products for a very long time, and they have never let me down. On older machines, Norton is likely to slow them down, but newer ones seem more than able to deal with it. I have seen virtually no slow down in processing speed.
It is a bit tricky getting the second and third PC protected if you have bought the product online, as you have to wind our through the menus to find that option to download it.
I find that Norton will start a system scan to check for viruses etc every so often, and this can slow things down a little. You do have the option to pause, stop or ignore the scan and you can always start one whenever you wish.
Bottom line: simple to download, install and run; and, your system is protected.

Norton "make your internet connection work really slow" internet security, 20 Nov 2008
Well.. I had been warned by a friend that this internet security package would make my internet connection even slower than other internet security packages. I have previously used Norton and although it has made the internet a little slower it was never as slow as it is now. It takes approximately 10 minutes (15minutes today) to just get onto the internet, through google. This is really annoying and I very much regret buying Norton this time around. I have adjusted the settings, but it has made little difference. I use wireless broadband, but when I'm logging into the internet, it reminds me of dial-up, admittedly once I'm logged in and on the internet it is alright, but I certainly would not recommend this product to anyone.

Didnt work properly., 13 Oct 2008
It made my computer really slow and i had to reboot it. I havnt a clue why this happend but i wont risk installing it again. 30 quid thrown in the bin. i'd rather have a virus ridden com than have this antivirus running on it!
hats off, at last!!, 22 Sep 2008
after an unsatisfactory trial with Kaspersky I decided on a simple antivirus, this is good, very good, its quiet, the pc runs quickly and smoothly and it even monitors my wireless network. Happy to buy this. Worth a serious look if you don't need a full suite. Well done it's taken a few years mind you but I think they have cracked it at Symantec! Ill be watching very closely if the virus and spyware is better, 2008 suite installed on my new laptop missed a trojan here and there so well see if this is better, but certainly from a running point of view it's spot on!

Reliable, durable and dependable., 19 Nov 2008
Norton... hard to review as it is so slick, and performs brilliantly. Latest tweaks to the programme are resource friendly updates, a new method of deep cleaning an infected PC or laptop if you are unlucky enough to have to install this on an infected machine, and of course the new licence feature, meaning you can install this programme on 3 machines running Windows (XP or Vista) in the same household. So, in summary this is the bare bones anti virus programme; If you need more of a complete suite of automated PC or laptop care Norton sells that in the form of Internet Security, or 360.
Well worth the money, simple to use, and of course extremely well tested and trusted.
Oh... it does rather need broadband for updates though, and gets rather cranky if you have a dial up connection, you can adapt the settings in it to compensate, but this is reasonably simple. Essential bit of kit though.
Works Ok, 19 Nov 2008
I've been pleasantly surprised by Norton AV 2009 mainly because I'd heard some not too good things about previous versions. This, so far, seems to do the job it was designed for quite well. Without professionaly benchmarking it however, I couldn't be completely sure it hasn't missed anything (but then that could be said for all AV software) and it doesn't flag up all the tracking cookies etc found by AVG.
After an initial, lengthy deep scan subsequent scans are rapid and the automatic updates are unintrusive though sometimes background tasks are a bit slowing on my PC. The interface is simple and usable.
On a fairly serious negative note I did have problems installing. At the point of loading drivers the install seemed to hang. A re-start and re-install brought the same problems and I left it loading for half an hour to see if it sorted itself out. Nope. I very nearly didn't try the third install, if I hadn't then I would have seen it install itself this time with no problems at all and I wouldn't have been able to write the positive things I have.
Pass, 18 Nov 2008
For my sins I do have an older PC at the moment (I'm sure I'll upgrade again eventually!) and after installing this product there were a couple of conflict issues as well as a noticeable difference in the speed of my computer, so much so that after a little tinkering (admittedly I'm no great expert, not be a long stretch) that I gave up and uninstalled it. Because of this I can't really comment about the software's prowess, although I expect it does the job, just not on my aged PC!
Much better than it used to be, 16 Nov 2008
The 2009 version of Norton is not as intrusive as the older editions, however it is still a large application which will slow down you PC activities by a noticable amount. In return for this you get A-class security, however there may be problems such as incompatibility with certain software on your PC which may require some complex work-arounds.
If you know you way around a PC and the OS then this won't be a problem, but casual users should look elsewhere.
does the job, 14 Nov 2008
As a long time user of Norton I guess i'm like many others who simply buy a product for its familiarity and ease of use.
The spec is lower than Norton's 360, but 2009 is more than capable of satisfying most needs.
Easy to load, works without intrusion, and thats what most people require.

One hell of a mistake, 28 May 2008
Okay, i'm up to date with modern technology and a bit behind when it comes with virus protection, lets say not as experienced as some and probably one of the youngest to comment on a product. I currently am using Norton nternet Security and thought about buying this product. But one word of advice you should consider. At the start the sign up to "Norton" is free. For a whole year it will do its job successfully, it does benefit from a simple user interface and isn't doesn't regularly demand attention. Its good for that i sing its praise. But after one year of the product, exactly 365 days. The product basically turns off. Its still monitors the basics but no longer recieves updates, so the risk is the same as before. Then comes the constant pop-up asking for a re-subscription to them. This might sound simple and it is, but a waste of money, it asks in the region of £60 for another year, for that you can simply upgrade and buy another anti virus software. But look at the alternatives, some are free like the avg online anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Although, this is a lot simpler to use, with a rather basic user interface, its still successful. I'm not discrediting this product, but consider the fact that it turns into a little virus itself, praying on the user for more money to re-subscribe. So i leave it to you, i personally think the product is effective but annoying after the 365 days of use. I for one will steer clear of this brand of software!! Will you?
Simple no fuss anti-virus protection, 28 Dec 2007
One thing about Symantec products is they work, if you just want a good anti-virus scanner that is simple to use and that is simple to keep up to date then this is the answer. The user interface if minimal, allowing you to scan your drives individually or all at once as well as manually running the update program. Other than installing it and letting it run a full system scan every now and then there is nothing to do, the software runs in the background; along with the auto updater.
Multiple system crashes..., 27 Nov 2007
I have used Norton Antivirus for years without complaint. I recently purchased the full 2008 version as a replacement for the 2005 version I was using, and it has completely buggered up the PC. Repeated system crashes and super slow performance despite a full re-format and re-installation of all software is now the norm. I would no longer recommend this product.
Awful., 24 Nov 2007
You'd think a company this successful could make anti-virus software that works. But no, it just removes necessary files from your computer, making it unusable. Go for AVG.
Better than previous versions, 18 Oct 2007
Just bought mine today.I have been with Norton for 2 years. It scans faster then previous versions of norton antivirus. It also has SONAR technology which picks up suspicious viruses lurking around. Main advantage is that you can use the licence for up to 3 PC'S.Well done Norton!

Main advantage is that you can use the licence for up to 3 PC'S.Well done Norton!
caution should be taken, 11 Nov 2008
this caused massive problems for us when installing it on a 4 system mini network (4 PC's) and on a laptop - see my full review on upgrade 5 users version. Treat with caution. Its caused us lots of stress
Norton Internet security, 11 Oct 2008
I don't rate Norton at all anymore, it's insidious, gets into every part of your machine and an absolute monster when trying to remove it from your system. Not recommended, does what its supposed to but not user friendly and a down right nuisance at times, steer clear, and try Kaspersky, so far it's a dream in comparison.
Norton 2008 Nightmare!, 04 Oct 2008
I installed Norton Internet Security 2008 on my DELL pc, which already had Norton 2004 installed. This latter program was due for a subscription renewal so I figured it would be cheaper to purchase and install the later version which must be an improvement mustn't it??? The installation appeared to go ok, but then it got stuck at the final "live update" stage. I left it running for about an hour, with the program apparently "updating" my pc, but it never completed and I guessed it must have "hung". I then tried to stop the installation, but to no avail. In the end, I was obliged to use "control-alt-delete" to halt the program. I then retried installation and the same thing happened. By now, my pc was running very slowly and took about 3 minutes to re-boot! I got VERY worried, wishing I had never bothered with the product. I then managed to uninstall Norton 2008. I then used System Restore to go back to where I started, hoping Norton 2004 would work ok again but of course it didn't! Error messages started appearing and the 2004 version would not run. I then tried to uninstall 2004 to get rid of Norton altogether from my system, but it would not uninstall and would not let me re-install over the top of the damaged program!!! Getting desperate, I used the windows "clean-up" program to uninstall all the bits of Norton from my pc and then cleaned up the registry with Registry Mechanic. Finally, I managed to re-install Norton 2004 which now appears to be 90% ok but some things no longer work - like email SPAM detection. I won't be touching any Norton products again. This episode has taught me a lesson and given me a great deal of unnecessary worry so I have returned the discs to Amazon for a full refund. Hope you have better luck with it than I did!
High performance, low on resources, unobtrusive, 10 Sep 2008
I own 2 PC's and a laptop all running on Windows XP. I previously used Norton Anti Virus 2007 but noticed the speed of the computers slowing. With the cost of the update renewals being expensive (around £20 each) and all the talk of Norton being resource hungry, I decided to try AVG Internet Security 7.5. Initially I was fairly pleased (only fairly because of all the pop-ups from AVG) but eventually AVG would not work on one PC and AVG support, after many time wasting attempts, were unable to fix the problem. The final straw was, less than half way through my 2 year AVG subscription, my 2 remaining computers started running very slowly. After checking my system resources (CTRL-ALT-DEL, Windows Task Manager -Processes - Mem Usage)I was astonished to find AVG as the largest memory user (click on mem usage header to get highest at the top). I decided to switch back to Norton after reading a review on Which? Norton have made huge improvements in speed. It still works unobtrusivelly in the background, plus all the user interfaces (menus) have a user friendly/professional feel to them. Now all 3 computers are running as if they were new again, whilst being protected at the same time. Highly recommended and worth the money.
Bad for for your hard drive. pocket and sanity, 08 Sep 2008
I made the mistake of trying to upgrade on line for this. The end result was needing to have my hard drive wiped and starting all over again. The software tells you it needs to uninstal the existing software before installing this. What it actually did was a fragmented uninstal that left bits of the prior version floating around running when it felt like it with no way to access and turn it off. Norton seemed helpful at first sending me a programme to clean up. This made the situation even worse. Oh and I had a virus come through with this rubbish. Norton then completely lost interest. I was now asking for my money back as this simply does not work. Norton now stopped replying to all forms of contact. Later they did try on sending renewal notifications for my older version that had been extracted only by wiping the hard disc. Maybe the disc might work but then they can not be trusted around updates as I have expensively found out. Norton really do not want to know, they have your money and well insert your own words.......
